About the Office

The county attorney represents the state in misdemeanor criminal cases in county court. The attorney works with law enforcement officers in the investigation and preparation of cases to be heard before the county court. Other duties include prosecution of juvenile offenders, representation of victims of violence in protective orders and of financial abuses.

The county attorney typically provides legal advice to the county commissioners court and other elected officials. In case of legal technicality or conflict of interest, the attorney makes sure they do not violate the Texas Government Codes. When requested in writing, the county attorney provides legal counsel to county officials about their duties of office.

In Jim Wells County, the county attorney investigates the hot checks and financial frauds committed by offenders and ensures offenders paid their restitution to the victims. Also, the attorney helps the justice of the peace with truancy cases involving children's non-attendance in schools.
